Invita- Tofu Burger and Vegan Cheesecake

In a sea of market chaos and fast food that characterizes our beloved Queen Victoria Market, Invita floats on its own island of ethical eating. For more than a decade, this popular market café is something of a paradise for people on alternative diets, namely vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free foodies. Though marketed for a niche group of people, the café attracts anyone with an interest in healthy and creative food.

Sunrise Scramble Tofu: a medley of mushroom, veggies and scrambled tofu in delicious spices. Served with roasted sweet potato and avo toast on GF Precinct bread. Gluten-free and Dairy-free.
What Invita makes with vegetables, spices, nuts and dairy-alternative products is pure magic. Take any item from the breakfast, lunch and dessert menu, you’ll find interesting coupling of ingredients. For instance, the pairing of tofu, beets, capsicum, corn and spices might seem unlikely, but the result is a wonderfully blended tower known as the ‘Tofu Burger.’

The Tofu Burger colored beautifully by beetroot and topped with hommous. Served with greens, beans and roasted veggies. Gluten-free and Dairy-free. Very very delicious.
It is evident of the owners' passion in creating earthy food with a twist. “My husband [he] has a lot of ideas. And really, we just want to make healthy vegetarian food that is tasty,” Jayani says candidly, leading me to conjure images of Janaka crafting various savouries and sweets and bringing his chefs on-board with his progressive ideas. Janaka must have a natural instinct for what’s tasty, because my lunch was absolutely delicious.

The Tofu Burger. Gluten-free and dairy-free.
Dishes are not only appetizing, they are healthily prepared; specifically, no artificial and GM products are used and nothing is deep-fried. Further, being strategically located next to an organic produce market, Invita sources many of its raw ingredients from their neighbouring grocers. Consequently, the ecological footprint from grocer to table could literally be measured in double digits. It’s these principles that endear Invita favourably to the eco-friendly and health-conscious folks.

The Sea Breeze: a freshly blended juice of pineapple, watermelon, strawberries, lemon and coconut water.
Being an outdoor café, much of the ambiance is defined by the activities at the market. Music from guitar crooners wafts across the square and Invita diners are benefited from the live performance. It is a casual space with upmarket health food provided at decent price points. Can this phenomenon occur anywhere else in Melbourne?

The very very popular Berry Cheesecake. Glluten-free and Dairy-free. It truly is the best tasting vegan cheesecake I've had in Melbourne.

Don't miss out on trying this vegan, gluten-free Cheesecake. It will blow your mind....
In the past year, Invita saw its second store taking root in North Fitzroy; getting deeper to the core of Melbourne’s suburb of alternative lifestyle and funky eateries. As well, Invita is expanding its range of retail products, such as prepared salads and wraps. These can be found at Aunt Maggie's Organics produce store.

Invita is located at 76 Therry St., CBD, Melbourne
