Rock Paper Scissors- Barcelona Salad and Berry Smoothie

In the latest round-up for Breakfast In's The Most Impressive Brekkie (Dec 2015)Rock Paper Scissors' Buttermilk Pancakes grace the digital pages- making a show of grilled bananas, fresh berries, double cream, shaved honeycomb and maple syrup tumbling down a tower of delectable hotcakes.

Amazing, ain't it?
Rock Paper Scissors is the newest addition to a hot corner of cafes in Port Melbourne. With just over four months of operation under the belt, already it's standing shoulder to shoulder among Melbourne's breakfast giants.

Barcelona Salad: sticky pulled-pork in greens and mandarin orange. Gluten-free and Dairy-free without fetta.
The cafe makes its presence known via the number of people turning off the main road to Rouse St. where a sign with symbols of a well-loved childhood game 'Rock, Paper and Scissors' discreetly indicates a place of coffee and kitchen.

Upon entering, you are met with a spacious open plan; a seating of 45 indoors with six more tables out front. Honey-toned timber, tolix sheet metal chairs and bar stools and pendant lights with big filaments present industrial aesthetics that are clean and timeless. The palette is a chic white, a merit of the white tiled walls and coffee bar, and light green from textured wall paper and foliage. Wooden panel inset to the ceiling heightens the visuals vertically and, on a good sunny day, the bi-fold windows wheel open- all together enhancing the indoor-outdoor connection of the fit out.

When asked who designed the space? Owner and Operator, Zack, a gregarious man with an askewed cap on, proudly affirmed his trade as a carpenter and builder. Rock Paper Scissors would be Zack's fourth restaurant business, and he is ever more into the game- designing and building attractive spaces with tasty food and coffee to follow.

Clockwise from the top left: Cookies and Cream Freakshake, Shakshuka eggs, Berry Smoothie, Corn Fritters, Cap, Barcelona Salad, latte, and Pancakes.
Zack's inspiration for good food comes from his family, many of whom are steep in the culinary arts of Europea. This influence is demonstrated in Rock Paper Scissors' all-day breakfast and lunch menu. "My mum's family is from Crete, and they have a dish on which the Superfood Breakfast is based on," Zack says. "Also, I traveled for eight months in Europe a couple of years ago and, in Barcelona, they make a salad that has sweetness and saltiness combined- using either chicken or pork. And here, we try it with sticky pork," explains Zack, nodding towards my Barcelona Salad, which is a bed of pulled-pork and mandarin slices gorgeously dressed with spinach and purple microgreens.

Brekkie favorites make the charts: pancakes, smashed avo, shaksouka eggs, corn fritters and birchers. As we head into the wraps of winter, we shall see more of a Middle Eastern twist to Rock Paper Scissors' offerings- perhaps  more grains and hearty slow-cooked meals. The menu is promised to be dynamic and unique.

Shakshuka Eggs with Gluten-free bread from Noisette.
For people with gluten-intolerance, dishes that are GF are well-indicated. You'll be pleased to know that the gluten-free bread is from Port Melbourne's own Noisette Bakery. Also note-worthy is the coffee. Head Barista, Vishu, wield a good command with Sydney's roaster, Toby Estate coffee. Dairy-free soymilk is from Bonsoy, the best dairy-free alternative on the market.

Finally, servers are an attentive and smiling bunch. One is never far away to bring you what you want or whisk away what you don't need.

Rock Paper Scissors is located at 136 Rouse St., Port Melbourne, Vic.
