Seven:AM Cafe- Coconut Mango Chicken Salad and the Goddess Smoothie

Port Melbourne has got Aces in its deck other then a popular beach and photogenic piers. It's got Seven:AM

Seven:AM Cafe is located on Bay St., the main thoroughfare in Port Melbourne. Flanked by fast food shops and beauty parlors, Seven:AM stands out from the generic eateries on the block. The single-front shop opens to alcove seating by the window- the beginning of a comfortable and attractive space. Exposed brick walls and wooden features, such as the high ceiling trestles, lend to an unfinished warehouse effect that is visibly cool. Peculiar pieces, like the string art on the ceiling and floating clouds, keep the visuals interesting. The space is bigger than expected; its length stretches far into the belly of the building block, revealing a courtyard at the end.

Goddess Smoothie. Dairy-free.
Its history dates back to 2009, when entrepreneur Jason Belcourt, converted an empty shell of a 19th century Victorian into a cafe. The project included building a commercial kitchen, front of the house seating areas, upstairs and courtyard. In the early days, Jason ran a neat blog documenting the process and how the cafe came together, menus and all. It was an organic way of generating interest in the local community and, to this effect, Seven:AM was off to a great start backed by local support.

Today, it is a distinguished mainstay in Port Melbourne, winning hospitality accolades in categories such as the Best Breakfast Restaurant and catering awards.

Bespoke brunch food @Seven:AM
Menus change seasonally, and I am happy to have visited during the Summer/Autumn season, where seasonal produce favors colorful food and refreshing flavors. The all-day breakfast/lunch menu features an array of substantial food to satisfy the brunch appetite. There are corn fritters, breakfast burritos, breakfast salad, bircher muelis, omelettes, burgers, things on bagels, sandwiches and jaffles. For gluten-free options, gluten-free bread from GF Precinct is the substitute for any of the bread-based dishes.

The special of the week: Poached egg, avo and smoked salmon on beetroot hummus. Gluten-free option with GF Precinct toast. The blackboard special changes weekly.

It is impressive that not one dish is remotely close to resembling another. Added to that, there's a great drinks selection to accompany your meal. Coffee beans by Supreme, Abbotsford's independent coffee bean roaster, takes the helm and is the base for milk-based coffees. Dairy free options include almond milk, coconut milk, lactose free and Bonsoy.

Seven:AM is a welcoming space where a break from the city fare is entirely possible and highly recommended.

Fun fact: The large communal table by the coffee bar is a relic of the past. It is actually a door from the wall knocked down in that exact location! I love a good story behind cool pieces. =)
