World Vegetarian Cafe- Healthy Vegetarian Cafe with Lots of Gluten-Free Options

Our cafe culture in Melbourne is seeing a movement towards a healthy and clean-eating model. Now, more than ever, healthy food choices can be found on cafe menus anywhere. New cafes are springing up, and those with niche markets in vegan, vegetarian, paleo or raw cuisine are gaining massive presence. It's a positive shift in our dining scene, and people like myself, are embracing it thoroughly.

One of the new healthy-eating cafes I've been to recently is World Vegetarian Cafe in Elsternwick. Opening its doors in September 2015, this homely cafe serves up healthy food with an emphasis on vegan cuisine.

Saying that, though, does not mean everyone coming in are vegans or vegetarians. In fact, World Vegetarian Cafe sees majority of its patrons being local folks with an appreciation for nutritious and tasty food.

World Vegetarian Cafe offers an ample choice of hearty breakfast and lunch options; including scrambled tofu, pillow-soft gluten-free and vegan buckwheat pancakes and warming vegetarian brown rice risotto bowl. A favorite and highly recommended dish is the paper thin masala dosa, with chunky potato curry and lentil soup.

The menu is balanced with salads, wholesome cooked meals, petite treats and cakes, smoothies and fresh-pressed juices. You will find many gluten-free and dairy-free items. Moreover, there is a blackboard special where Jenny, the owner, dishes up new things weekly.

Interestingly, World Vegetarian Cafe has a vein of semblance with a healthy-eating cafe in Alburqueque, New Mexico. That cafe is Annapurna World Vegetarian. It is owned and operated by Jenny's sibling. Together, the family share a passion of cooking in a healthy way.

For one, this means getting rid of processed white flours in favor wholegrain flours in its kitchen. You will find that cookies and muffins are made with either wholegrain spelt flour or a gluten-free flour blend which Jenny makes herself. The recipe involves wholegrain brown rice flour and sorghum flour- full of nutrients and fibre.

In this way, Jenny ensures that whatever treats you have at the cafe, it would begin with a healthy base. This is true for grain-based dishes too where brown rice is predominantly used.

Further, Jenny and her cooks use various spices to flavour and bring a healing element, such as turmeric for its anti-inflammatory property, to the food. Jenny takes care to toast and ground her mix of spices used in chai latte, golden turmeric latte and curry bowls, in the shop. There is no compromise with store-bought drink mixes or spices.

For Jenny and her patrons, these are hallmarks of quality food; the difference of which you can taste and see.

Thank you Jenny for having us at your cafe. Truly exceptional experience!
World Vegetarian Cafe is located at 452 Glen Huntly Road, Elsternwick, Melbourne, VIC
